Lenovo has zero interest in Windows 10 Mobile, and will not be making a smartphone powered by Microsoft’s mobile operating system anytime soon. The Chinese tech giant isn’t even convinced Microsoft is committed to Windows 10 Mobile at this point. Which says it all really.

These views come direct from Lenovo’s corporate president and chief operating officer Gianfranco Lanci. According to The Register, Lanci told attendees at the Canalys Channel Forum 2016:

“We don’t have Windows phones or any plans to introduce a Windows Phone. I don’t see the need to introduce a Windows Phone and I am not convinced Microsoft is supporting the phone for the future.”

Lanci certainly isn’t the first to doubt Microsoft’s commitment to Windows 10 Mobile, but he may be the most high profile doubter thus far. Lenovo is a huge multinational company, so its execs will likely know how to spot a dead product when they see one.

All Quiet on the Windows 10 Mobile Front

If Lenovo thought it could make money from a Windows 10 Mobile handset then the company would have produced one by now. But Lenovo has gone all-in on Android, helping Google’s mobile operating system achieve an 87% share of the market.

Windows 10 Mobile IS currently the third most popular mobile operating system. But when Android and iOS combined take literally 99% of the market share, this isn’t something to write home about.

The problem is Microsoft doesn’t seem to be doing anything to turn the fortunes of Windows 10 Mobile around. There are rumors of a new Windows 10 Mobile flagship handset being launched later this year, but unless it outperforms the iPhone 7 and best Android phones, then it’s probably dead in the water before it’s even released.

Microsoft needs to act, and it needs to act fast. Because Lenovo is unlikely to be the only company ruling out getting involved with Windows 10 Mobile. The question is, what can Microsoft actually do to make Windows 10 Mobile a success at this point? Answers on a postcard, please.
