Despite all the controversy a couple of years ago about the invasive permissions of Facebook Messenger, the platform has continued to be a popular messaging service. Part of its charm comes from its user base — if your friends are on Facebook, you can reach them via Messenger. Thus, it’s always accessible and doesn’t require any additional accounts.

With the power of Messenger comes some downsides, however. Read receipts are great for silently acknowledging that you’ve seen the other person’s message (such as sending “I’m running a few minutes late!”). Some aren’t a fan of them, however, claiming that they’re too invasive and remove the ability to not respond to the message tactfully.

If you’re one of the latter and want to turn off read receipts in Facebook Messenger in Chrome, here’s how to do it.

Thankfully, all you have to do is install an extension for Chrome. Unfortunately, a lot of the popular ones that accomplish this task have injected ads into their tools, and we can’t recommend them. The most well-reviewed extension for the task seems to be FB Chat Privacy. Once it’s installed, just visit Facebook or Messenger, click the extension’s icon at the top-right, and choose to disable the “seen” or “typing” messages.

Don’t typically use Chrome? Add a dedicated shortcut to Messenger using Chrome, install the extension, and use Chrome solely for Messenger access. That’s your best option without having to commit to Chrome — you’ll barely know it’s there.
