This Weird Bug Breaks Monster.com Only on Chromebooks

If you’re looking for a job, Monster.com is one of the biggest job search engines to help you on your quest. Using it lets you find all sorts of opportunities near you no matter what area your skills are in.

However, if you’re using a Chromebook, you may have found that Monster links don’t work as they should. Apparently, clicking any job listing links using a Chromebook will simply refuse to work. This is a known issue that Monster has no intention of fixing, so it’s time to take matters into our own hands.

Of course, Chrome is the only browser usable on a Chromebook, so we’ll have to get tricky and change the browser user agent. If you’re not familiar with this, every browser includes a bit of information about itself that sites can use to identify which browser you’re using.

Thus, by changing the user agent, we can make Monster think that we’re using Firefox or another browser.

The most convenient way to do this is by using an extension. Unfortunately, some of the popular ones have been accused of hijacking affiliate links and stealing revenue, so you have two main options. User-Agent Switcher for Chrome is barebones and hasn’t been updated in a while, but gets the job done. If that one doesn’t suit your fancy, try the older User-Agent Switcher.

Now, when you’re on Monster’s site, click the toolbar icon for the extension and choose an alternative browser from the list, such as Firefox or Internet Explorer. This will fool Monster into thinking that you’re not using a Chromebook, and everything will work as it should.
